Famous inhabitants of Weissenfels




 
Weissenfels was founded in 1185.
A lot of famous people knew this historically important town. We want to tell you something about these people and the most famous places in Weissenfels.

 

Heinrich Schuetz (1585 - 1672)
was one of the most famous composers of his time. He was conductor at the court of the Saxon princes. Amongst many others, he composed the “Johannes-Passion“
and one of the first operas “Daphne“. In Weißenfels there is a house which carries his name because he bought it in 1651 and lived there till 1672.
Today it is a museum and sometimes concerts are held there.
It is a Renaissance building from the 16th century. 

     

Friedrich von Hardenberg (better known as Novalis) lived 1772 - 1801.
He was a poet in early German Romanticism.
Other famous people of this time said about him, that he was a philosophical and poetical genius.
He had a house in Weissenfels which is a public library today and behind the house there is a small park
with a pavillon.
Everybody can visit the concerts and readings there. 
Louise von Francoise (1817 - 1893)
She was a popular native country poetess. She wrote a lot of novellas and short stories. Her most famous novel is “Die letzte Reckenburgerin“. She wrote it here, in Weissenfels. On market 6, everybody can visit her house, the “Louise-Francoise-Haus“. In the next future it is possible that the house will be a museum.

 

Johannes Beer (1655 - 1700)
He was an author and composer. Besides his musical talent which brought him to the court of August, the Duke of Saxony-Weissenfels, he was also well-known for his many literal masterpieces.

 

Johann Gottfried Seume (1763 - 1810)
He was a well-known poet in Weissenfels, who became especially famous for his walk to Syracuse. His experiences are written down in his most important work.
